Sequence:
Print portfolios and single prints are arranged in chronological
order wherever possible. In some instances, prints having the same
image but different dates are placed side by side. In order to
preserve the catalogue numbers from the first edition of Andy
Warhol Prints, the letter a or b is used when an early print
omitted from that catalogue has been added.
Measurements: Height precedes width in inches; metric
measurements, in centimeters, are given in parentheses.
Measurements indicate the size of the paper. If image size is much
smaller, both the image and sheet dimensions are given.
Signatures and Marks: Although sometimes the prints are
signed and numbered on verso, in most instances they are signed
and numbered on the front in either pencil, ball point or felt
pen. All prints are numbered in Arabic numerals unless otherwise
noted. Some prints are just initialed; some are also dated. Prints
completed after Warhol's death bear special estate stamps and
signatures on verso. Wherever possible, we have indicated the
location of the signature and number, based on the prints
photographed. However, this may vary within any given edition.
Proofs: Abbreviations used in this catalogue are as
follows:
AP - Artist's Proofs, which are of quality equal to the edition,
numbered as AP 1, etc. In some Deluxe Editions,
DEAP appears with the number.
PP - Printer's Proofs, which are of quality equal to the edition,
numbered as PP 1, etc. In some Deluxe Editions,
DEPP appears with the number; in some Special Editions,
SEPP appears with the number.
EP - Exhibition Proofs, which are of quality equal to the edition,
numbered as EP 1, etc. These are prints produced for exhibition
purposes.
HC - Hors Commerce prints, which are of quality equal to the
edition, numbered as HC 1, etc. They are often produced for
collaborators.
TP - Trial Proofs, which are prints pulled during the proofing
process to document color changes in the edition. They are made
into small editions and numbered as TP 1, etc. If there are
Artist's Proofs or Printer's Proofs, TPAP or TPPP appears with the
number. In most instances, we have not photographed Trial Proofs
because each is a unique print, but we have documented them.
BAT - Bon A Tirer. The trial proof selected to be the image for
the edition. It means ready to print.
